Fumaroli Lecture and Book Signing, When the World Spoke French
 Join
Marc Fumaroli as he discusses his new book When the World Spoke French
which has been hailed by the New York Times as “magisterial,” and
cited by the Wall Street Journal for “his command of sources, his
treasury of recondite detail and his narrative zest” all of which “combine
in a sustained celebration” of the French and their influence in diplomacy.
Marc Fumaroli is the Director of the Académie Française and has been a member
of the Committee on Social Thought in Chicago. Reception and book signing to
follow.

Artist Spotlight: Phoebe Darlington
Another in an ongoing series of profiles of artist customers of the Athenaeum’s Regional Digital Imaging Center
(RDIC).
 Phoebe
Darlington creates portraits in pencil. After twenty years with the medium, her
work practically sings off the page. "Capturing mood, light and delicacy of
form, as I perceive it, has always been a goal best achieved, for me, with
pencil."
Phoebe
discovered that she was a frustrated artist at the age of four. Having only
crayons to work with, she was unable to capture the beauty of a tulip. "I
was unable to render the subtlety of the petals and in my disappointment made a
decision on the spot that tulips were unattractive (and not the smartest)
flowers, an opinion that lasted into middle age."
 Although
Phoebe participates in art shows, most of her work is commissioned. She works
from photographs, which she prefers to take herself, although many portraits
have been created with photos received through the mail or on-line. "I love
the way graphite captures skin tones which is why I have concentrated on human
subjects predominantly. Recently, I have enjoyed capturing the personalities of
dogs for whom I have a great affinity."
An online
search for a Cruse Scanner in the Philadelphia area introduced Phoebe to the
Athenaeum in 2007. "The unparalleled service and availability of the staff

The Flag
Book is a very expressive, interactive, three dimensional book. The flags have
wonderful movement and allow for multiple images and content. Come and create
your own designs for the pages and the covers and assemble your very own book.
We will be using collage, stencils, stamps and other elements to celebrate
Halloween.
