American Antiquarian Society Historical Periodicals Collection

Is summer your best time for research?  If so, please do not forget that the Athenaeum owns the online version of the American Antiquarian Society periodicals dating from 1691 to 1877.  This is a searchable, printable, and e-mail-able database available both in our building and outside to Athenaeum members.  If you are researching from home, you will need a password – which can be obtained from Jill Lee at either 215-925-2688 or jilly@philaathenaeum.org.  This general periodical collection covers science, literature, medicine, agriculture, women’s studies, family life, religion and many other topics, and includes many magazines and other periodicals which our own Athenaeum never owned.  Records for the periodical titles are included in our Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC).

The Triumphant Return of Mr. Durang

Your Conservation Funding at Work

The portrait of eminent architect Edwin Forrest Durang by Lorenzo Scattaglia has returned from cleaning and restoration by Steven B. Erisoty.  Formerly cloaked in a dark and discolored varnish, the Durang portrait now reveals the wooden panel behind the sitter as well as a better view of the architectural drawing instrument which he holds.

Volunteers Needed

In fall 2008, with the aid of generous volunteers, the Athenaeum began opening on one Saturday per month.  Over the years since that time two more Saturdays have been added, again through the good efforts of volunteers.  Now the Athenaeum wants to take the next step and begin opening in fall 2015 on all Saturdays in the month, barring holidays and major snowstorms.  Please help us with this project.  The hours will remain 11am to 3pm on each Saturday.  If you have time to volunteer any hours for these Saturdays, please contact Sandra L. Tatman, at 215-925-2688 or sltatman@philaathenaeum.org.  Your enthusiasm and willingness to serve are most appreciated!
