Fans at the Athenaeum
Object ID:
2012.73.27
Description:
Telescopic folding fan with double fabric pleated leaf. Dark brown fabric leaf is undecorated. Wood sticks and guards; guards are incised with a simple floral design. Metal loop at rivet.

Unlike regular folding fans, the sticks of telescopic fans are not adhered to the leaf; rather, each stick is loosely encased in a sleeve formed by the leaf front and back. When the leaf is pulled outwardly, the fan size expands. When the leaf is pushed inwardly, the fan retracts to a convenient compact size. (On this particular fan, the telescoping feature no longer works.)
