Athenaeum Receives Philadelphia Cultural Fund Grant

 

The Athenaeum is pleased to announce that it is one of 247 Philadelphia-based arts and culture organizations to receive an operating fund grant from the Philadelphia Cultural Fund.  This is the 20th anniversary of the Philadelphia Cultural Fund, which specifically promotes arts and culture in Philadelphia.  In total $1.630 million was awarded to the 247 organizations.  Thank you, PCF!


 

Current Exhibition-From Seneca Falls to Philadelphia: Fourth of July 1876 and the Women of the Centennial

As part of the Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts in 2013, the Athenaeum collaborated with the Philadelphia Center for the Book to produce an exhibition which combines select items from the Curry/Sherk Centennial Collection with the work of contemporary book artists who responded to a Call for Entries.

Exhibition Dates: April 1-May 18, 2013

Book Arts Workshops

There are two book arts workshops in April:

Folded & Woven: Book Arts for Kids without Gluing or Sewing (Children Ages 8-12) with Ananda Connolly

Saturday, April 6, 2013, 2:00-4:00pm

Free

This workshop will teach children basic folded and woven book structures that don’t require sewing or gluing. Children will learn the skills necessary to create books on their own using paper and a pair of scissors. Students will follow along step by step instructions to create several practice books., then they will experiment with basic mono-type printmaking techniques such as crayon rubbings and stamps to create one-of-a kind decorative papers. Finally they will create their own artists’ books utilizing one of the folded or woven structures and incorporating their decorative papers or printmaking techniques.  The workshop will conclude with a facilitated wrap up in which students can show off their the finished work and talk about their process.

Super Low-Fi Print Options & The One-Sheet Folded Book as Building Block! with Erin Sweeney

Beginning our day with two simple print techniques that can easily be repeated in your home studio, we will make a passel of prints and printed paper. In the afternoon, we will explore a number of simple and versatile one-sheet folded books using our printed matter. We will each choose one structure to develop further, discussing methods to use this simple form as a building block for a more sculptural and developed book structure. Teaching artist Erin Sweeney lives and works in New Hampshire, having completed her MFA in Book Arts and Printmaking at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, where she was awarded the Elizabeth C. Roberts Prize for Graduate Book Arts. She holds a BFA in sculpture from the Maine College of Art. Her current work combines fibers, text, and the book form.

Membership Libraries Group Meets at The Providence Athenaeum

 

On March 16th Dr. Tatman joined 10 other directors of libraries which are part of the Membership Libraries Group at the Providence Athenaeum, designed by Philadelphia's William Strickland.  Providence Director Alison Maxell opened the library for tours and meetings, including a short workshop on using a Wiki to disseminate information to the Board.  This yearly meeting allows the surviving membership libraries to share ideas about programs, funding, and other special issues important to subscriber-supported libraries.
