The Athenaeum is pleased to announce that it is one of 247 Philadelphia-based arts and culture organizations to receive an operating fund grant from the Philadelphia Cultural Fund. This is the 20th anniversary of the Philadelphia Cultural Fund, which specifically promotes arts and culture in Philadelphia. In total $1.630 million was awarded to the 247 organizations. Folded & Woven: Book Arts for Kids without Gluing or Sewing (Children Ages 8-12) with Ananda Connolly Saturday, April 6, 2013, 2:00-4:00pm Free This workshop will teach children basic folded and woven book structures that don’t require sewing or gluing. Children will learn the skills necessary to create books on their own using paper and a pair of scissors. Students will follow along step by step instructions to create several practice books., then they will experiment with basic mono-type printmaking techniques such as crayon rubbings and stamps to create one-of-a kind decorative papers. Finally they will create their own artists’ books utilizing one of the folded or woven structures and incorporating their decorative papers or printmaking techniques. The workshop will conclude with a facilitated wrap up in which students can show off their the finished work and talk about their process.
