November 30, 2012-January 11, 2013 Reference Room To Close During Renovation The Athenaeum’s Henry Paul Busch Reference Room will be closed from November 30, 2012 through April 1, 2013 to accommodate window restoration, removal of the current mezzanine shelving, and the construction of new shelving on the south wall. During this time, the reference book and serials collection will be unavailable to researchers, members and staff. Reference and reproduction questions concerning architectural drawings, photos and archival materials will be answered by staff, but in-person consultation of these materials may not be possible during this closure. Efforts will be made to accommodate Athenaeum members, and we apologize in advance for any inconvenience this construction may cause.
Regional Digital Imaging Center Reproduces Historic Paintings for White House Executive Offices
In August the RDIC staff fulfilled a request from the Preservation Office at the White House Complex. White House Preservationist George Kanellos thanked RDIC staff members for what they did for the White House in providing reproductions of the State Department’s historic portraits of former Secretaries of State. "The images are perfect....the detail...the stroke of the brush, and the pleasant aging. All are now displayed in two very significant [and recently restored] rooms in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building...formerly, of course, the State War and Navy Building. In 1875, Hamilton Fish moved into the space...the first of twenty four men serving as Secretary of State in that building. His portrait now hangs in the Diplomatic Reception Room along with Thomas Jefferson, Daniel Webster and Lord Ashburton. John Hay hangs in the ante room. The space is regal...once again with the generous, competent and quick work of the Athenaeum of Philadelphia’s Regional Digital Imaging Center.” On October 16, Bruce Laverty, Michael Seneca, and Jim Carroll joined a group of curators from public buildings throughout Washington, DC for the first official showing of these spaces with their historic reproductions in place.

Celebrating
its 200th Anniversary, the Academy of Natural Sciences enjoys its
distinction as the oldest natural history museum in the Western
hemisphere. This wonderfully illustrated and organized volume represents
the first complete history of the Academy and packs in the stories of the
individuals, ranging from Thomas Jefferson and John James Audubon to
Ernest Hemingway, who contributed to our knowledge of the natural world
through the Academy. Robert McCracken Peck is Senior Fellow and Curator of
Art and Artifacts at the Academy of Natural Sciences. Patricia Tyson
Stroud is an independent scholar who lives in Wayne, Pennsylvania, and
East Blue Hill, Maine. Both have written extensively on natural history.
Athenaeum member Janet Kimbleton Grace, a Senior Project Manager at AthenianRazak, was recently recognized with the Commercial Real Estate Women (CREW) Philadelphia Legacy Leader Award. Janet will receive this award at the CREW Philadelphia Annual Fall Charitable Luncheon on November 15th. Janet is receiving this award for her work as a longtime CREW member who continues to stay involved with CREW Philadelphia and the commercial real estate community. Janet is also the incoming president of CREW Philadelphia for 2013.
