Charlene M. Boyer Lewis, Elizabeth Patterson Bonaparte: An American Aristocrat in the Early Republic. ![]() Most of us have heard of the infamous Betsy Bonaparte, whose marriage to Emperor Napoleon’s brother Jerome was annulled by the emperor himself. After the annulment Elizabeth Patterson Bonaparte, born in Baltimore, MD, returned to the United States where she exercised considerable social power at the center of the new American social and political order. Charlene M. Boyer Lewis reminds us of the fragile American political experiment and the active role of women in debates over society and culture in the early American republic. Charlene M. Boyer Lewis is Associate Professor of History and Director of American Studies at Kalamazoo College. Free for Athenaeum Members. Members may bring a prospective member for free.
