The Great Illustrators: Part II

Frank Schoonover (1877-1972) studied with Howard Pyle at the Drexel Institute and later in Chadds Ford, PA.  Like both Pyle and Wyeth, he remained in the Brandywine Valley, producing stained glass windows as well as the many illustrations for which he is best known.  Charlotte Harding (1873-1951) was a product of the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, and she also studied with Howard Pyle, both at Drexel and at the Academy of Fine Arts.  She shared a studio with Alice Barber Stephens in Philadelphia.

In the early twentieth century quirkier artists like Oliver Hereford and C. Coles Phillips enter the arena of illustration.  Hereford, who produced such titles as Excuse It, Please and New Waggings of Old Tales, employed a decided satirical approach to his writing and illustration.  In the book displayed here architect B. G. Goodhue supplied the medievalized border decorations.  C. Coles Phillips (1880-1927) relied upon fashionable young women for his illustrations, but he added a twist which allowed parts of the figure to fade away into the background – thus, the Fadeaway Girl became popular for both magazine covers and book illustrations.
