Moving
Toward The Modern:
Contrast
the work of Peter Newell and Harrison Fisher with that of Wharton
Esherick
As
the twentieth century progressed, many publishers turned away from
more traditional, colored illustrations to using either
photographs or black and white illustration.
Often well-known artists like Wharton Esherick contributed
their illustrations to this more modern approach, employing
stylized figures and an almost-cubist style in covers.
