Moving Toward The Modern:

Contrast the work of Peter Newell and Harrison Fisher with that of Wharton Esherick

As the twentieth century progressed, many publishers turned away from more traditional, colored illustrations to using either photographs or black and white illustration.  Often well-known artists like Wharton Esherick contributed their illustrations to this more modern approach, employing stylized figures and an almost-cubist style in covers.
